Recession-Proof Pet Products

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 - Posted by Leigh Morrisett

Are pet products recession-proof? In 2009 American households spent an estimated $45 billion on their pets, despite a tough economy. What is the driving factor behind this market? Could it be that roughly 6 out of 10 households have a pet? Or could it be the majority of pet owners view their pets as a member of the family?

The desire to spoil a pet that provides unconditional love is a strong motivation when it comes to consumers parting with their money. Given all this,  it appears pet products have the ability to weather a tough economic storm.

Think about it:  Even in these economic times people continue to spend money on their pets. A leading box-mart pet store boasted a six percent increase in sales, amid U.S. economic struggles. Such a large increase when the economy is in strife clearly shows that pet products may be recession-proof.

What does that mean for you?
Maybe now is the time to collar the pet product market. Where do you begin? The majority of pets are dogs and cats, and as a result, most of the pet products purchased are for dogs and cats. But, what else do you need to know to come out ahead of the pack?

Who's Buying  For Their Pets?

Research has shown that baby boomers and empty nesters are the most common purchasers of pet products. Boomers love to dote on their pets, which, in turn, creates a need and a opportunity for dog accessories, cat toys, pet clothing and other pet-oriented products.

Empty-nesters with stable, disposable incomes are buying upscale collars, dogs beds and even doggie pools.Young professionals who are delaying the start of a family and opting for raising a pet are also jumping on the pet accessory bandwagon. A versatile customer base from all segments of life is what makes pet products a tremendous sales opportunity.

Selling Pet Products

As a retailer, what sales strategy should you take when about selling pet products? You need a clear starting point, whether expanding the pet products you offer or adding them to your existing product mix.  Take stock of what you already have and how pet products relate to your existing merchandise.

Do you offer gourmet foods? Gourmet pet foods maybe the perfect way to dive into the pet industry. If you carry jewelry, try adding dog or cat-inspired jewelry and upscale leashes and collars. New products are best introduced when you associate it with a product you already sell.

When you take time to work new products into your sales mix, you will have a greater success rate. One of the biggest mistakes a retailer can make is adding a product that is too different from their normal product mix.

Think about it:  It is far easier to sell a customer a dogie tee shirt, if they normally buy your line of human tees. The combining of human tees with dog tees is not at all far fetched.

The tee shirt example is just one example of how “cross selling” can help you integrate pet products into your store. “Cross selling” is an easy marketing tool that any shop can utilize. Just remember items like jewelry can lead to …click here to read Recession-Proof Pet Products…

Demin Skirt

Tops aren't the only pieces of clothing that make a fashion statement. Denim skirts for dogs are the most adorable pet clothing item.  Any dog who pairs a denim skirt with a harness vest is sure to be the next top dog on the block.

Not only are DITC's harness vests functional and fashionable, they were voted one of the Pet Style News top ten editor choice winners in 2009.  Pet Style picked the harness because "A unique twist lock prevents unwanted escapes when walking and serves as a connector for leashes. Functionality is a major component of  Dog In The Closet pet clothing. In fact, their coats are made of denim with silk appliqués or 100% Italian wool to keep wearers warm during a walk around the block.

How Do You Keep Your Dried Spices Dry?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 - Posted by Brynn Jackson

From gourmet chefs to everyday foodies, everyone is raving about Dry Spice™ canisters. These spice canisters keep moisture out and flavor in. When it comes to preserving spices and keeping them fresh, Dry Spice™ canisters are a dream come true.

Ever turn the spice container to sprinkle a dash and a clump falls out instead? Clumping, caking and reduced intensity of flavor and aroma are all results of moisture problems within the spice container.

Dry Spice™ canisters prevent this foodie faux-pas for up to one year. Dry Spice™ canisters treat up to 5 ounces of dry spices — and KEEP them dry. No caking. No clumping. No worries.

Cyclists, hikers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts will love how mess-free and convenient these spice canisters are. They make cooking outdoors a breeze! Boaters and yachtsmen also enjoy how the Dry Spice™ canisters prevent the moist sea air from seeping into their spices. Professional chefs and bakers can't get enough of Dry Spice™ canisters. They are everyone's spice solution!

The magic of Dry Spice™ canisters is silica gel. The canister itself contains one gram of silica gel which draws moisture away from the air inside of the canister and prevents any moisture from making its way inside. Silica gel in this form has been proven non-toxic, non-flammable, non-reactive and stable with ordinary use, such as in Dry Spice™ canisters. The FDA has approved Dry Spice™ canisters for regular use in the prevention of moisture build-up and spice storage.

As an added benefit to chefs of all types, even the labels on Dry Spice™ canisters are eco friendly and safe. Traditional printing methods are thrown out the window in favor of ONLY the use of organic dyes on recycled paper. Dry Spice™ goes the extra mile to ensure the flavor, quality and safety …click here to read How Do You Keep Your Dried Spices Dry?…

Personal Care Products Make For A Heathly Profit!

Monday, December 14th, 2009 - Posted by Leigh Morrisett

Why Personal Care Products?

With the current economy, shop owners are asking which products are proven sellers. The answer quite simply is personal care products. Sales figures collected by the U.S. Department of Commerce reveal that personal care products rank just under  food and beverages. The outlook for personal care products will be steady; growth driven by the organic and natural niche markets.

Wholesale personal care is a large market with a variety of products from lotions and soaps to aromatherapy and sleep masks (including neck pillows with flax seed and lavender). Keep in mind, personal care products can be items that promotes healthier skin, body or mind.

Rising Personal Care Trend

For the past few years, the personal care trends have gravitated toward natural and organic personal care products. Forecasters are predicting organic and natural personal care products will be popular for many years. A rising personal care trend is based on social conscience. Consumers are seeking products that parallel their social conscience ideals. These products often are cruelty-free, not tested on animals, or eco-friendly products.

Personal Care Products – For Wellness

Your customers are looking for products that promote their health and well being.  Aromatherapy products are one such wellness niche. Many fragrance-enhanced products, such as neck pillows, natural pain relief sprays, candles, and essential oils  fall within the scope of aromatherapy. These are products that you should easily incorporate into your product mix.

Consumers who seek wellness products are also interested in organic and naturally-made items as well. To optimize your sales effort, seek out wholesale aromatherapy products containing all natural and organic ingredients.

Personal Care Products – For Beauty

Today, both men and women are interested in that youthful glow. Although consumers are forgoing the spa, they still want to look refreshed, hydrated and youthful. Capitalize on the consumer's need for youth by stocking products like lotions, skin conditioners, soaps, hand and foot scrubs.

Choosing Personal Care Products

With the vast selections available, it may seem hard at first to determine which personal care products to sell.  Considering a few factors such as price points, whether the products organic or natural and the "would I use it" litmus test will make your decision easier.

Price Points - The second factor consumers consider when purchasing a product is price. However, it should be your first. The best strategy is to select middle-of-the-road price points for the majority of your product mix. This is where you as a business owner need to know your clientele. Middle-of-the-road price points will vary by store and location. Only you as a shop owner can determine if a product falls in to your areas mid price point. Do select a few high-end products or gift baskets because you never know when an average consumer may splurge on skin care products or specialty soaps.

Natural And Organic – Be aware of the current trends. Natural and organic products are currently a hot trend and will be for a few years. Carry a fair percentage of natural and organic skin care products.  At the same time, keep your eyes and ears open to new trends and have money ready to invest in these trends as well.

Do I Like It - This is by far the one question you should always ask. Your gut feeling will guide you with this question. If you’re not an immediate fan — or at the very least mildly excited about a product — you will have a have a hard time selling it. In a small shop consumers rely on the owner and staff for advice on products. If you are not sold on the product's benefits, the customer will pick up on your hesitation and you may lose a sale.

Personal care products are proven sellers. It is now up to you as shop owner to determine which products will sell best in your store. The bottom line is personal care products can make for a healthy profit.

Need help finding the right personal care products? Candy – A Sweet Money Maker

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 - Posted by Leigh Morrisett

The Abundant Consumption Of Candy

Eight billion pounds of candy is consumed each year.  What does this significant number demonstrate?  It shows how much Americans love to indulge in chocolate, lollipops, hard candy, mints and gum.

Americans of all backgrounds and ages will and do enjoy some type of candy throughout the year. If you are not already selling candy, ask yourself  "why am I passing up such a large customer base?"

Why Sell Candy?

Gift baskets are a very popular item for florists.  The largest product requested in these gift baskets is some type of sweet treat. In fact, most people enjoy giving candy as much as receiving  it.

Gourmet Chocolates From Amber Lyn
Gourmet Chocolates From Amber Lyn
Offering chocolates, hard candies and even specialized treats  such as sugar free and low-carb candies is an easy way to capitalize on a hungry market. You can even offer candy arrangements for those who want to send a gift a bit different from flowers.

Many items purchased by consumers are gifts.  Offering specialty gourmet candy gives your store a unique selling proposition and a way to hone in on a niche.

With candy, you can leverage the gift giving niche as well as the entertaining niche. Candy items such as anniversary chocolate coins (or embossed chocolate) make for great party favors.  Gourmet chocolate and candy give frugal customers a gift with great perceived value.

Who Needs Candy?

Who needs candy? Everyone! They just don't know it! As a retailer, knowing your customers and their tastes is the key to your product mix. Teaching customers they need candy is the key to successful sales.

How do you teach a customer they need your product?  By solving their problem or fulfilling a need. Candy is no different. Here is an example: You have a customer who is the hostess of a baby shower.  She asks your advice on what she can do for decorative place card holders.  You demonstrate how she can write names on the ribbon tied around your baby booty lollipops.  You have just solved her problem and sold lollipops to boot.

Providing customers with products, service and advice is what  keeps customers coming back.  Whether you are a flower shop or a gift retailer, you have to be choc-full of ideas. Your customers will look to you for advice and candy can be your go-to answer.

How To Select Candy

Selecting candy is like building a house. Start with a foundation based on popular trends and traditional standards. Chocolate is the standard foundation.  It is tried and true.  But every foundation needs to incorporate rising trends. Novelty candy is a good trend indicator.  This year lollipops with unique flavors or shapes is a large portion of the novelty market.

Every house needs personalization.  So add personalization by offering a selection of custom candy. There are many options when it comes to custom or semi-custom candies.  Custom candy could be a lollipop that can be imprinted with one's name, slogan or a specific date.  A semi-custom candy would be a candy bar wrapped in specific colored tin foil or mints in special tins.

Unique and special candies make your candy house a home. Trendy candy ideas that appeal to specialty groups or interests will give your store the unique and special candies it needs.  Healthy candy sounds like an oxymoron but it is actually a rising trend. Sugar free and low carb will be a trend for the next couple years, as well as organically made chocolates with higher percentages of cocoa content (greater amount of antioxidants). Look for flavor infused candy in both chocolates as well as hard candy.  Candy infused with fruits, herbs and other spices will be a hot trend.  Incorporating these special types of candies will create a unique product mix that sets you above your competitors.

By utilizing the great wholesale chocolate and candy vendors on FGmarket you will be able to find the right products to help sweeten your sales. To jump start your candy search check out the FGmarket wholesale candy vendors highlighted below.

The Wholesaler's Guide To Essential Oils

Thursday, May 14th, 2009 - Posted by Brynn Jackson
What are essential oils?

"Essential oils" are the oils naturally formed in plants which contain the plant's distinctive fragrance or essence -hence "essential" oil.

Where do essential oils come from?

Essential oils are usually formed through a process called distillation. Here the plant is placed on a screen and steam is forced through the plant. Then the mixture is cooled until it condenses. Essential oils are hydrophobic liquids (resist water) so they are easily separated at this point, bottled and sold.

How do people use wholesale essential oils? What are wholesale essential oils for?

Essential oils are used for many reasons. Many essential oils are used to add a distinct flavor to food. Almond oil, coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower seed oil, grapefruit oil, oil of thyme, peppermint oil and others are used for this purpose. Each of these oils maintains the unique, distinctive flavor and/or smell of the plant and brings this quality to the food or beverages in which they are ingredients.

Wholesale essential oils are also used to add a distinctive smell to personal care products such as bath soaps, shower gels and other bath products as well as many perfumes/colognes and cosmetics. Examples of wholesale essential oils used for this purpose are camphor oil (for a mentholated smell), tea tree oil, myrrh oil, lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, rose oil, frankincense and others.

Essential oils have also been linked to therapeutic/aromatherapy healing. Chiropractors, doctors, aromatherapists and other medical attention providers often use products containing essential oils for therapeutic purposes. Essential oils seen in products often used by these specialists are flaxseed oil, palm oil, borage oil and linseed oil (also used in oil paint production).
